Among all types of synthetic polymers, PET production is the most environmentally friendly one. For this very reason many PET plants in America, Europe, China and Japan are located in urban areas, indicating that they have virtually no environmental impact. For example, in Slovakia and Poland, enterprises manufacturing PET and products made of this polymer are located in 200 meters from residential area.

Safety of PET for people

The safety of PET for all food packaging is confirmed by the leading specialized European center – Technology and Packaging Institute Fraunhofer IVV (Germany), founded by the research center determining food packaging safety in the EU countries, which prepares conclusion reports for the Regulations of the European Commission and the European Food Safety Agency. Samples of PET products were analyzed for possible content of phthalates, bisphenol, methanol and formaldehyde. All tests were carried out in compliance with the EU-certified methods with the highest measurement accuracy: up to 1 nanogram per gram of substance (10-9). According to the official report of Fraunhofer IVV (Germany), «None of the substances tested were detected in the samples of PET and PET bottles, the samples examined meet all safety requirements».

Environmental safety

PET packaging, when considering the full cycle of its production and use, is more environmentally friendly and safer than paper and aluminum. Its production is less energy-intensive, consumes less water, generates less waste and emits fewer greenhouse gases. Used PET products are recycled into a wide range of textile and technical products.

PET waste is in the safest class 5. The toxicity of PET in incineration, according to Japanese researchers (chromatographic analysis of incineration gases), is identical to that of firewood.

Non-waste production

Recycling is the return of waste to the production process.

Production of PET pellets (polyester) is waste-free, and all polymer with deviations in quality (e.g. during line start-up) is either recycled back into the process or sold for the production of glue, lacquers, etc.

Multistage monitoring system

The process is controlled by the most advanced automated control system based on central processors.

In the event of breakdown, control functions are taken over by the redundant ones. All measuring instruments and actuating devices installed in process equipment are connected to the distributed control stations.

These stations are installed right in the production area. Whereas the stations are connected to the central processors by a duplicated data bus. At the top level of the control system, the operators of the remote control panel communicate with the technological process via a human-machine interface (visualization system).

The degree of process automation in the PETF synthesis line is 100%.

The ESD (emergency shut-down) system is provided.

In accordance with Federal Law No. 7-FZ dated January 10, 2002 “On Environmental Protection” and Resolutions of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 262, No. 263 dated March 13, 2019, the enterprise will provide for:
  • systems for automatic control of substances entering the atmosphere;
  • developed and approved program of industrial environmental control.

Industrial wastewater treatment

A biological treatment system is planned to be installed at the plant site. The treated water will be routed to a sewage wastewater header after the necessary analyses have been carried out.

No hazardous gaseous effluents

Almost the entire PETF production process is carried out under vacuum or in an inert gas (nitrogen) environment, therefore, the main task is to counteract the ingress of oxygen from the air into the process. The emissions from the technology are minimal.   

Insignificant emission (in low concentration) of acetaldehyde (AA) and EG (ethylene glycol) vapors is possible only at the pelletising unit and during sampling. For these positions, captor hoods are provided, the air from which is first routed to a scrubber, where traces of acetaldehyde and EG are absorbed by water, and the rest are sent to incineration in gas burners of heating furnaces for high-temperature organic heat transfer fluid - a gas boiler house. Thus, in the furnaces of a gas boiler house, in a mixture with air, all traces of AA are burned out, and on exit from the boiler house pipe, the composition of gases does not differ from that of a boiler house heating residential buildings in urban areas (CO, CO2). There are no other sources of emissions in the project.

The acetaldehyde content in the emissions at the border of the Sanitary Protection Zone (SPZ) after such a two-stage treatment has minimal concentration, and is much lower than hygienic standards of GN 2.1.6.3492-17 “Maximum allowable concentrations (MAC) of pollutants in the air of urban and rural settlements”, as well as lower than the more stringent standards of EU countries.

High energy efficiency

The specific utility consumption: electricity, natural gas, water, compressed air, nitrogen in the licensors' technologies used in the project complies with the best international standards and is better than the values for best available technologies (BAT).
